BIOGRAPHY - Doug Johnson Hatlem was raised primarily by his loving and devout Baptist mother and grandmother in Southern California. He attended Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia where he studied philosophy and government and spent two years on the debate team. After a year off at home waiting tables and applying to graduate schools, he began a joint degree program at Duke University in Law and Theology. After a year of the law program he was engaged to Jodie Boyer Hatlem. They were married in Dec. of 2001 and Doug completed his studies at Duke's Divinity school in 2004, having decided against completing the law portion of the dual degree. In 2003 Jodie gave birth to Johanna and in 2005 she gave birth to Simeon, completed her Master's of Divinity degree and matriculated in the PhD program in the Centre for the Study of Religion at the University of Toronto. Jodie and Doug moved to Toronto primarily in order to begin an intentional Christian community, now known as the Junia House, with friends of Jodie's from her undergraduate days at Calvin College. The Junia House includes two families with three kids, soon to be four, and an older gentleman named Steve Grant.

Doug met Steve through his work with Sanctuary where he was seconded to work by MCC and Lazarus Rising. Doug began his work with Lazarus Rising in the fall of 2005. Sanctuary is a church in the heart of downtown Toronto that runs a variety of art, woodworking, meal, health, and street outreach programs as a way of building a downtown community from all walks of life with the poor at the centre. Since the summer of 2006, much of Doug's work has involved coordinating street outreach programming for Sanctuary. This past fall he began a new three year term under the aegis of the unique three way partnership between Lazarus Rising, MCC, and Sanctuary.
